The Joomla Project is pleased to announce the immediate availability of Joomla 1.7.0. This is a security release. This is also the first release made within the new six-month release cycle that started with the delivery of Joomla 1.6 in January 2011.
The Production Leadership Team's goal is to continue to provide regular, frequent updates to the Joomla community. Learn more about Joomla! developement at the Developer Site.
Version 1.6.5 will reach end of life one month from today, on 19 August 2011. All users of version 1.6 should update to version 1.7.0 before that time. The update process is very simple, and complete instructions are available here. |

Certainly you were not able fully learn Joomla! 1.6, and we can download from joomlacode.org, for testing purposes only, the next version of Joomla! 1.7 alpha 1. With the new (6 month) release cycle that the next edition will be realise soon (on 13 June - Joomla beta 1).
From what I can find out, the opinion of such rapid evolution are divided. Some people enjoy that chase the other CMS, making changes to the engine, and not just base on external extensions. But there are also critical voices, or that this race is really needed? Do developers need every six months instead of focusing on the development of their expansion, "wasting time" to adjust to the new version.

According to the Joomla! Development Strategy Joomla 1.7 should be released on the 10th of July. As stated by Production Leadership Team (PLT) member Mark Dexter, developers had until June 1st (yesterday) to submit their code to be included in Joomla 1.7. Currently there are 25 items in the Joomla 1.7 feature tracker that have the status 'Pending', 4 'Ready for review' and 1 'Accepted'. Based on the items in feature tracker, I will highlight several of the new features and patches that might be included in Joomla 1.7.
