With over 4.5 million RSS feed subscribers with huge traffic from the world over, TechCrunch and Mashable are among top 2 tech blogs for many years now. I love reading both of them but I do prefer visiting Mashable on daily basis as it provides more tutorials than TechCrunch in a friendly way. However, TechCrunch is also a great blog I regularly pay visits to!
Tim Amstrong – the CEO and Chairman of AOL has announced that TechCrunch was acquired by AOL for a great price of $30M.
Following this press release, all websites of TechCrunch Network would be transfered to AOL including MobileCrunch, CrunchGear, TechCrunchIT, GreenTech, TechCrunchTV and CrunchBase and of course, the TechCrunch team except Michael Arrington will continue working with AOL to continue TechCrunch work with new strategy and vision.
For the reasons why Michael Arrington decided to sell TechCrunch seems not ok to me as I know that he is just 40 now and I must say, at that age, Michael has a lot of energy to bring TC to higher level but he still got it acquired. Is that purely for money or he wanted to start a new business? No one knows just him!
The truth is I was tired. But I wasn’t tired of writing, or speaking at events. I was tired of our endless tech problems, our inability to find enough talented engineers who wanted to work, ultimately, on blog and CrunchBase software. And when we did find those engineers, as we so often did, how to keep them happy. Unlike most startups in Silicon Valley, the center of attention at TechCrunch is squarely on the writers. It’s certainly not an engineering driven company.
Anyway, TechCrunch is now a part of AOL together with ENGadget and I am sure that it will get more investment and resources to continue its strategies. I am also thinking about Mashable future now and I hope that it will not be acquired like TC.
